Mode locking of semiconductor lasers in a coupled-cavity configuration with a strongly coupled empty auxiliary cavity

چکیده
Mode locking of semiconductor lasers in a coupled-cavity configuration with an empty auxiliary cavity is studied theoretically. The empty auxiliary cavity, when strongly coupled to the main cavity, is found to influence the pulsation situation significantly. The predicted pulse widths and chirp parameters in the steady state are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. The influences of the linear phase shift induced by the cavity-length variation and the self-phase modulation in the main cavity on the pulsation are also briefly discussed. © 1997 Optical Society of America. The stability of two semiconductor lasers that are spatially separated by a passive resonator is analyzed using the composite-cavity mode approach. We study the nonlinear interactions of three composite-cavity modes and identify regions of in-phase and out-of-phase laser locking in the parameter plane of the transmission coefficients of the coupling mirrors and the laser length difference. متن کاملComparison of timing jitter in external and monolithic cavity mode-locked semiconductor lasers
A comprehensive timing jitter comparison is made for mode-locked semiconductor lasers using active, passive, and hybrid mode-locking techniques in both external and monolithic cavity configurations. Active mode locking gives the lowest residual rms timing jitter of 65 fs ( 150 Hz-50 MHz), followed by the hybrid and passive mode-locking techniques. It is found that monolithic cavity devices with...

We numerically study the synchronization or entrainment of two unidirectional coupled single-mode semiconductor lasers in a master–slave configuration. The emitter laser is an external-cavity laser subject to optical feedback that operates in a chaotic regime. The receiver can either operate at a chaotic regime similar to the emitter (closed-loop configuration) or without optical feedback and c...
متن کاملMode-locking of monolithic laser diodes incorporating coupled-resonator optical waveguides.
We investigate the operational principle of mode-locking in monolithic semiconductor lasers incorporating coupled-resonator optical waveguides. The size of mode-locked lasers operating at tens of GHz repetition frequencies can be drastically reduced owing to the significantly decreased group velocity of light. The dynamics of such devices are analyzed numerically based on a coupled-oscillator m...
